THE ASSESSMENT

Note:

  1. Ensure safety: We keep drills and activities age-appropriate for 3rd - 8th grade.

  2. Rotate coaches: This allows players to receive feedback from multiple perspectives.

  3. Make it fun: Include fun challenges or mini-games to keep engagement high.

  4. Keep track: We use evaluation sheets for each player to note strengths, areas for improvement, and any specific positions they may be best suited for.

Remember, the primary aim is to assess skills, but it's also important to ensure that the kids have a positive and enjoyable experience. The assessment also helps us with the draft and promotes fairness and balance among the teams.

REASON FOR ASSESSMENT

At GWS building a fair and balanced draft system is essential for creating a fun, and educational environment for all participants in a youth flag football program. The GWS Academy draft format prioritizes fairness and balance among teams:

Pre-Assessment Preparation:

Player Evaluation: During the assessment, coaches should evaluate players based on their skills, attitude, and potential. All coaches will have a shared evaluation sheet where they can make notes about each player. Skills to evaluate may include passing, catching, speed, agility, defense, and understanding of the game.

OUR SELECTION FORMAT

  • At the end of the assessment, coaches should collectively assign a skill rating to each player, say on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being a beginner and 5 being highly skilled).

    • Decide on the number of teams and assign one coach (or a pair of coaches) to each team.

    • Ensure that each team starts with an equal number of foundational players (typically 1 or 2 players). These foundational players can be the children of the coaches or randomly selected players, but they should represent a mix of skill levels to ensure no team has an initial advantage.

    • Coaches draw lots to determine the initial draft order.

    • To ensure balance, the draft will use a "snake draft" system. This means if a coach has the first pick in the first round, they'll have the last pick in the second round, then the first pick in the third round, and so on. This prevents any team from having a sustained advantage throughout the draft.

    • Beginning with the first coach, each coach selects a player when it's their turn. They'll choose based on their evaluations, trying to create a balanced team in terms of skills and positions.

    • Coaches continue selecting players in the predetermined order until all players have been drafted to a team.

  • After the draft, there should be a review period where coaches can discuss the teams. If all coaches agree that one team appears significantly stronger or weaker than others, they can negotiate trades to balance skill levels.
